Shiatsu is a Japanese therapy, based on the principle that vital energy (known in Japanese as Ki) flows throughout the body in a series of channels called meridians. According to this principle, symptoms can

be caused when this energy stops flowing freely. Shiatsu practitioners use thumb and palm pressure, stretching and other techniques to restore the balance of energy.

The origin of the term 'shiatsu' lie firmly within the roots of traditional oriental medicine. The name comes from the Japanese word 'shi' meaning finger and 'atsu' meaning pressure. It literally means finger pressure. However, the spirit of Shiatsu is one of communication by touch. Shiatsu differs from Westernised forms of massage, which just concentrate on the client’s muscles. Shiatsu stimulates particular points on the body's energy channels in order to effect the body's natural healing energy. Shiatsu is a highly sophisticated form of bodywork.
